On Governor Schwarzenegger - A Ship Without a Rudder

In his press conference announcing his new COS Governor Schwarzenegger said that he knows where he is going and that Ms. Kennedy will help him to get there.

Really, now?

Would Governor Schwarzenegger be going in the direction of reforming "politics as usual?"

If so, why hire the Deputy COS to Gray Davis - a woman that was in the middle of one of California's most corrupt administrations in modern history? Was she, or was she not part of the Oracle scandal?

Would Governor Schwarzenegger be going in the direction of "living within our means?"

If so, why is he promoting $50 billion dollars of indebtedness? Was he being honest when he repeatedly told the people of California that the state does not have a revenue problem, rather it has a spending problem?

The truth is, Governor Schwarzenegger is a ship lacking a rudder. Such a ship is bound to drift into any waters; and, perhaps run aground or sink. Republicans in California jumped aboard the good ship Schwarzenegger to "get a win." Now, faced with the reality of a drifting vessel, those same Republicans will either jump ship or sink.

In fairness, nobody should be surprised by the actions of Governor Schwarzenegger. He never indicated that he was a conservative thinker, or for that matter a thinker committed to any particular philosophy. And, from the very beginning (remember the announcement) he has proven to be erratic.

The best hope for Republicans will be to stick to first principles, and play the role of a responsible and loyal opposition. Right now there is no clear leader for California Republicans. Nature abhors a vacuum, and as such somebody will become the new "standard bearer" - let's just hope that someone is a ship with a rudder.
